India's NEDO projects to cut 255,000 tons of CO2 annually

What was agreed

• Establishment of a Regional Energy Efficiency Centre (REEC) in Chennai via an MOU between India’s BEE, NPC, and Japan’s NEDO, with capacity building to be completed by the end of 2010.
• Implementation of NEDO’s commercial-scale model projects for coke dry-quenching, diesel generator fuel-switching, and sinter cooler waste heat recovery, expected to reduce CO2 by approximately 255,000 tons annually.
• Signing of an MOU between NEDO and India’s Ministry of Coal for a commercial-based model project on high-efficiency coal preparation to reduce ash content.
• Signing of an MOU between Japan Coal Energy Center (JCOAL) and India’s Central Electricity Authority (CEA) for a study on improving thermal efficiency and reducing environmental impact of coal-fired power plants.
• Operationalization of the first India-Japan Joint Venture manufacturing plant for supercritical pressure boilers and turbine generators, supported financially by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC).
• Continuation of cooperation under existing MOUs between JOGMEC and ONGC Videsh (exploration), JOGMEC and DGH (methane hydrate), and METI and MOPNG (oil stockpiling).
• Feasibility study by NEDO for a microgrid using mega-scale solar energy as part of the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor initiative.
